Summer in Leytonstone
The sun is shining, the boats are out on Hollow Ponds, and this weekend sees the start of Leytonstone’s summer festival season kicking off with the Leytonstone Arts Trail from 6-14 July and the Leytonstone Festival from 11-21 July.
Look out as well in house and shop windows for art appearing as part of Let’s Fill Leytonstone with Art.
This month also sees the return of the Sunset over London Tower Tours at St John’s Church giving spectacular views to the City and beyond.
Saturday 8 June 2013 is Love Your High Street Day in Leytonstone organised by the London Borough of Waltham Forest and E11 BID.
There will be a day of activities in Leytonstone Town Centre including a pop up Hitchcock cinema, silent disco, open day at St John’s Church and regular activities like the E11 Market.
Don’t miss the opportunity too to visit the Stone Space’s Star Walls exhibition which closes on 9 June and Woodhouse Players’ The Oedipus Plays on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June.
Waltham Forest residents will also get vouchers to spend in local shops.
Forest Recycling are giving away free paint this Saturday, there’s live music, theatre, a new art exhibition and next week a charity market at O’Neills. And lots more going on in Leytonstone. Please pass the message on!An exhibition by local artist Carne Griffiths whose distinctive style uses brandy and tea for his paintings started this week at the Slate Gallery (the window space next to the Stone Space on Church Lane) and runs until 13 April.

Monday nights are Quiz Night at the Red Lion. See the Red Lion website for details of their regular and special events. What’s Cooking has music on Wednesday’s and the 2nd, 4th and 5th Saturday of the month and is now at the Birkbeck Tavern. There’s Live Music on Friday Nights at O’Neill’s and look out for dates for live music at The North Star Sessions.

The Plough and Harrow turns into a music venue this weekend with its Venue Launch Party on Saturday. There’s also live music at The Crown on Saturday evening and this Saturday is also due to see the opening of the E11 Market, outside Matalan.
Reside continues at the Stone Space and next Wednesday Leytonstone Film Club is screening the French film 36 Quai des Orfèvres.
Leytonstone doesn’t have a cinema, but the cinemas will be full from the end of this week with a new film about Sir Alfred Hitchcock, who was, of course, born in Leytonstone.

The Sheepwalk reopens as The CrownThe former Sheepwalk Pub on Leytonstone High Road is believed to be due to open this Friday as ‘The Crown’. Peeking through the windows it looks like it will have an atmosphere more like the Red Lion than the old Sheepwalk and will be offering food as well as drink.
A taste of Hungary comes to LeytonstoneJust up the road from The Crown is Leytonstone’s first Hungarian delicatessen, Magyarok Boltja. Üdvözöljük a Leytonstone-ban (that means welcome in case you’re not fluent in Hungarian)! They have a Facebook page (the pictures are in any language you want them to be, but the text is Hungarian). Hungary has always had a reputation in Eastern Europe for having the best food, Budapest was often described as the Paris of the East, so a Hungarian influence on the High Road could be a good thing.
The Leytonstone Festival Annual General Meeting will be at 7pm on Tuesday 20 November and all members are invited to attend to set the vision for the Leytonstone Festival 2013.
Today sees the opening of an exhibition of drawing, painting, animation, photography and sculpture at the Stone Space.
