Summer in Leytonstone
The sun is shining, the boats are out on Hollow Ponds, and this weekend sees the start of Leytonstone’s summer festival season kicking off with the Leytonstone Arts Trail from 6-14 July and the Leytonstone Festival from 11-21 July.
Look out as well in house and shop windows for art appearing as part of Let’s Fill Leytonstone with Art.
This month also sees the return of the Sunset over London Tower Tours at St John’s Church giving spectacular views to the City and beyond.
www.ItDoesTheJob.com is calling for entries to its Mural Our Wall competition for the Leytonstone Arts Trail and Leytonstone Festival.
The theme is ‘sustainability, re-using and the environment’.
The closing date is 16 May 2013.

Run a workshop for Leytonstone Arts TrailLeytonstone Arts Trail is inviting groups or individuals to apply to run workshops as part of this year’s Arts Trail. The deadline is Thursday 28 February 2013. Details are on their website:
Leytonstone Festival is calling for proposals for this year’s event. If you want to put on an event as part of this year’s Leytonstone Festival you need to submit a proposal form before 26 April. More details on how to obtain the form and where to send it back from:

Festival and Arts TrailIt’s the last weekend of Leytonstone Festival and Leytonstone Arts Trail and there’s still a packed programme of Festival events and art appearing all over the area, not just in the 16 venues taking part but also in people’s windows and gardens.
With the sun reckoned to make a much delayed appearance it promises to be a perfect weekend to enjoy these events.
Some of the pictures at Norlington Road Studios — it’s worth a visit as there are many more to see. Entry is free.

Olympic torchThe Olympic torch arrives in Waltham Forest this Saturday. It’s not coming to Leytonstone, but will be going along parts of Leyton High Road.

From 12 to 22 July Leytonstone Festival and Arts Trail will be offering a wide selection of events including art, drama, music, comedy, photography, arts and crafts market and much more all around Leytonstone.

New tours, which started July 2012. You are taken to the top of the church tower for half an hour to enjoy the stunning views over London. The tours start with music from a professional musician and end with a free tea/coffee or chocolate. Booking essential.

With Euro 2012, the Olympics and the beginning of Wimbledon next week likely to dominate the media in the next few days, let’s not forget that the Arts Season in Leytonstone kicks off this weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday there’s art and music and more at Arts in the Park in Langthorne Park, Leytonstone. See the Waltham Forest Guardian for more details.
Langthorne Park is easily reached on the 257 bus from Stratford and Walthamstow.
The Stone SpaceThe Stone Space in Church Lane, has a particularly interesting exhibiton, which features works about Leytonstone called ‘1 day’s walk’. Conveniently it’s only 1 minute’s walk from Leytonstone tube, where of course you can also see the Hitchcock Murals as a refresher for the Sir Alfred Hitchcock festival coming up soon. On Saturday 23 you can also see printed photos from the online Leytonstone Museum.
Just round the corner, with arts, craft and homemade food will be the Lion Heart Market this Saturday.

If you’d rather turn your creative talents to growing fruit and veg, Let’s Grow Local on Sunday will feature guest speaker Pam Warhurst who will talk about how the Todmorden community in Yorkshire turned disused areas into a giant allotment. Tea and cake and much more. All welcome.

Waltham Forest Arts Club Selected Exhibition as part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail would like to see your work for an exhibition about time.
There is no charge for entry. Deadline for submissions: 27 April.
Coincidentally, I stumbled on this article today which gives local memories about Nissen huts built temporarily along Whipps Cross Road for people made homeless during the Second World War. With all the temporary buildings going up for the Olympics, I thought it made interesting reading.
